Museum in Gettysburg makes best small town museum list for 3rd year

For its third year in a row, a Gettysburg museum was named by USA Today readers as one of the best small town museums across the United States.

The Shriver House Museum, nestled in the historic downtown of Gettysburg Borough, continued its run in the top five small town museums in 2026, placing fifth nationwide in the ranking of 10Best small town museums.

In 2025, the museum placed third, and in 2024, the museum had placed sixth on the same list.

The Shriver House, located at 309 Baltimore St. in Gettysburg, provides a look into the lives of civilians in Gettysburg during the historic battle, with guides in period attire leading guests through a tour of a restored 1860s home, recounting the harrowing experience of the Shriver family.

“Although history is everywhere in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Shriver House Museum allows visitors to explore a restored family home from the mid-1800s,” the ranking stated for the museum.

“Led by a guide in period attire, guests will learn about the civilian experience during the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg.”

The museum opens for the season with weekend tour dates beginning on Feb. 28, 2026, with weekday tours beginning on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

General admission tickets begin at $15, $14 for seniors and veterans, $13 for Adams County residents, and $10 for youth. Tickets are available to be reserved online.

In addition, tickets are free for children ages 5 and under, active duty military, Adams County students, and Adams County Historical Society members.

Recently, the museum provided a historic setting for filming of the upcoming film Gettysburg 1863 by Director Bo Brinkman, which transformed the scene on Baltimore Street in front of the museum back in time to the dirt roads of 1863.

The film is expected to be released later this year, according to the Gettysburg Film Commission.

In 2025, the museum was taken over by new management, with the Adams County Historical Society taking over the ownership of the historic site when the museum’s original founders retired.
