A group of Pennsylvania Democrats are pressing Congress to withhold funding from federal immigration authorities until officials enact safety reforms and accountability measures to prevent overreach.
State Rep. Tarik Khan is preparing the resolution days after federal agents shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, the second person slain during President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in the Minnesota city.
Though the Trump administration has defended the officers involved, the shootings have stirred outrage in Minneapolis and across the nation.
“No community should wake up to another killing in broad daylight, especially in a peaceful American city like Minneapolis,” Khan said in a statement. “We deserve safety, transparency and answers, not continued escalation and more violence.”
His proposal would urge congressional lawmakers to condition future funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on a list of reforms, including use-of-force standards; release of body-camera footage after deaths or serious injuries; a requirement that agents wear visible identification, and a requirement for an independent review of serious use-of-force incidents.
More than a dozen House Democrats signed on to support Khan’s legislative proposal.
