US News recently released its annual rankings of hospitals nationally in 15 adult specialties. Seven of the commonwealth’s hospitals made one or more of the lists.
Seven hospitals in Pennsylvania ranked among the best nationally in various areas of specialty care, according to US News and World Report’s latest rankings.
US News evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals in 15 adult specialties as well as recognized hospitals by state, metro, and regional areas for their work in 21 more widely performed procedures and conditions. The top 50 hospitals in each specialty were nationally ranked. Only 164 hospitals performed high enough to be ranked in one or more of these specialties.
The rankings are intended as a guide for people who need specialized care for things like joint replacement, heart failure and cancer, or care for especially difficult or rare conditions. It says the rankings are based on data related to survival rates and other measurable medical results, patient survey results and opinions of doctors who are asked to name the hospitals they consider best.
