Red Lion community pantry/fridge
A new initiative organized by local resident Jennie Donahue, is fighting everyday food insecurity at 137 West High Street.
There, multiple cabinets and a cooler are stocked for the community to take what they need and leave what they can, whether it’s canned foods, fresh fruit, baby formula, bread and more. Everything is free, and available for anyone in need, or for those who wish to give. Clothes are not a preferred donation at the moment due to limited space.
Currently, items accepted include kitchenware, toys, games, office supplies, toiletries and first aid supplies or over-the-counter medications. Items for the food pantry cabinets include any sealed, non-perishable food times, canned or boxed foods, pet food, baby formula and more.
Perishable items including produce, dairy, meat, restaurant surplus and even homemade meals are accepted in the cooler. “We encourage others use their own discretion if they choose to consume homemade or open items. Often local organizations will bring multiple containers of leftovers that would be otherwise wasted. We also know that there are many homeless that benefit from these meals,” community pantry organizer Jennie Donahue said.
