Maritime museums are an enriching way to learn about local nautical history and heritage. Each museum across the nation tells the history and story of battles, exploration and more while diving into the local maritime history.
The Erie Maritime Museum, along Erie’s bayfront at 150 E. Front St., has been nominated for the USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards for best maritime museum.
The Erie Maritime Museum provides an experienced filled with maritime history and heritage of the commonwealth while showcasing Pennsylvania’s contributions to the Great Lakes industry. The museum illustrates the history of Lake Erie while highlighting the importance of the War of 1812 and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.
It is home to the U.S. Brig Niagara, which is in Maine undergoing repairs that should be complete before the summer.
Both the museum and U.S. Brig Niagara are owned and administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, the official historical agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The winning museum will be announced on Feb. 18.
