Forming stereotypes about people and animals can have devastating consequences.
The York County SPCA is hoping to educate people and win some adoptions for often overlooked dogs during Pit Bull Awareness Month in October featuring a nostalgic ’90s theme.
“Pit bulls aren’t even a recognized breed, but a name given to dogs that fit a common type of characteristic,” said Steven Martinez, Executive Director of the York County SPCA, during the kickoff event, “mixed-breed dogs that share similar physical traits, including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and mixes of those breeds. Because of this broad label, many dogs are inaccurately identified as pit bulls based on appearance alone.”
Martinez added that “larger stays (in shelters) and high barriers to adoptions often because of a stigma and every dog is an individual and must be treated that way so many pit bull type dogs are family friendly and loyal and a resilient pets who deserve fair opportunities,”
The York County SPCA invites the community to join in by adopting, fostering, volunteering, donating, or sharing positive stories about pit bull-type dogs on social media. Tag @yorkcountyspca to help spread awareness.
“Pit bull-type dogs represent a large portion of our shelter population, and each one deserves a safe, loving home,” said Martinez. “This month is about celebrating them, connecting with the community, and building brighter futures for these dogs.”
Throughout the month, the York County SPCA will host events to connect the community with adoptable pit bull-type dogs and their friends, including:
- Free Adoption Fridays presented by the ASPCA – Oct. 10 (free adoptions on adult dogs).
- “Pup Up” events at Gather256 – Meet adoptable dogs in the community.
- Pitties and Friends Adoption Event presented by Beacon Dog Behaviorists – Oct. 19.
